LEE Jinyong

LEE Jinyong (1961-) has spent decades collecting antique objects, capturing the accumulated textures of time and memory within them. Whether drawing books, aged light bulbs, bags, or portraits in hyperrealistic style, he seeks not mere reproduction but to elicit the traces of time and resonance within each object. Since 2014, he has produced the Continuum series inspired by ancient types that he has collected. Imagining ‘what humans cannot achieve,’ he repeats this process like anonymous ancient builders stacking pyramids—a ritual that engraves the passage of time into the body. To LEE, Chinese characters in types are primal symbols imbued with traces of painting, recalling an era when script and image were indistinguishable. Within them, he perceives humanity, art, civilisation, and the cosmos, conveying realms beyond expression. The individual types assemble into vast patterns, visualising the micro- and macro-structures of particle and universe, individual and collective. Grounded in the Buddhist principle of dependent origination, the small particles form the world, which then expands into further worlds, like a mandala. While his work originates in the old, he does not replicate originals but re-creates objects ‘resembling an aged state’. Dressing objects in time reveals traces of decay and disappearance—the beauty and truth emerging at the threshold between life and death.

LEE had his first solo exhibition at Rotary Gallery in 1984, followed by a solo show at Shanghai’s Hakgojae Gallery in 2015. He also participated in group exhibitions at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, (Gwacheon, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Busan Museum of Art (Busan, Korea), and Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art (Kitakyushu, Japan). His works are in the collections of major art institutions, including National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (Gwacheon, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Leeum Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), and Hoam Museum of Art (Yongin, Korea).
