Chung Sooyoung (1987-) paints everyday spaces inhabited by others. While various objects and situations fill these spaces, people themselves remain absent. However, these environments reveal the intimate tendencies of those who use them and, at the same time, reflect the collective identity of the group to which they belong.
Ultimately, depicting a specific space is both a form of individual portraiture and a means of shaping a collective identity. The spaces in Jung’s paintings originate from personal experiences but inevitably expand into the lives of others. Furthermore, beyond aesthetic discourse, his work explores the limits of visually expanding deliberately staged situations and objects.
