Hakgojae Gallery will present a solo exhibition by Chung Sooyoung (b. 1987, Seoul) titled 《I want to be invited, but I don't want to attend.》, running from Wednesday, May 28 to Saturday, June 28. This marks the artist’s first solo exhibition at Hakgojae. The exhibition features over 30 paintings, centered around her new ‘Pantry’ series.

Chung Sooyoung paints everyday spaces devoid of human presence, yet filled with objects and scenarios that hint at the lives of their users. These spaces subtly reveal the personal tendencies of individuals while reflecting the collective identity of the groups they belong to. By depicting specific environments, the artist simultaneously crafts portraits of individuals and the communities they inhabit. Through traces left on objects and their current states, Chung seeks to unveil the psychological undercurrents of human behavior. Furthermore, she explores the boundaries of visual expansion beyond traditional aesthetic discourses, intentionally staging scenarios and objects to challenge conventional perceptions.

Chung Sooyoung received her bachelor's and master's degrees in Painting from Ewha Womans University. In 2018, she earned a master's degree from the Royal College of Art in the UK.
