NOH Suntag

Born in 1971 in Seoul, Noh Suntag lives and works in Seoul. He received his B.A. in politics from Konkuk University and studied Photographic Design at Hongik University, Graduate School of Industrial Art. The artist records contemporary Korean society in political and social context in the format of hands-on documental photography.

Dealing with political and social issues, Noh questions the meaning of the nature of a camera and a photographer. His work captures the intensity of the scene and contains the aesthetics simultaneously, which appeal for sympathy with twisted humor. The artist approaches to the problems of Korean society not as regional-ideological conflicts, but as universal struggles of human.

Starting from Smells like the Division of the Korean Peninsula, a series of documentary news photography published in 2004, his publications include: The Strange Ball (2006) that photographed the American Army Radome in Daechuri in Pyeongtaek; Red House (2007) that captured the characteristics of North and South Korea; State of Emergency (2008), whose publication was awarded Silver prize at German Photo Book Award in 2009; Really Good, Murder (2010), that seized the moment exposed to war weapons; and Forgetting Machines (2012) that looks back on the 5.18 Gwangju Uprising.

He was awarded the Silver prize in 2009 German Photo Book Award, and the 11th Dong Gang Photography Award in 2012. He was the finalist of Hermes Foundation Art Award 2013 and was chosen as the Artist of the Year in 2014 by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, for the first time as a photographer.
