Hakgojae Gallery is delighted to announce the forthcoming exhibition of Hyeonkyeong You’s fifth solo exhibition held from 28th March to 29th April 2012. This exhibition is You’s first exhibition to be presented at Hakgojae Gallery.
Based on Hyeonkyeong You’s imagination and memories, her works are records of individuals and space, staged situations with men and women as subject, and female artists and male models. The artist believes the ideal painting is done when the hand is given free rein to move about the canvas without the deliberate interventions of the conscious mind. However, she always hesitates before beginning her work and concludes herself this act as lying.
Having earned a spot in German residency
program, You stayed in Plüschow, small rural town located in Mecklenburg area
of Northern Germany for the last five months. She painted portraits of the
residents of the town. She explored the landscape and natural elements there as
well as worked on understanding the literatures—to comprehend the past and
present of Plüschow. There, she struggled to observe the inner-side of the
residents and represent their lives.
This exhibition is going to represent about one hundred works of You’s portraits. Although all the works are portraitures of the models, the exhibition is trying to explore ‘invisible elements’ and ‘the attitude of the artist and one’s circumstances through her art.
