QIU Anxiong

Qiu Anxiong’s video and animation works are affluent with serenity, delicacy, and elegance. The serenity and delicacy deal with social and political issues. They also cross over concepts of ‘space and time’, and ‘reality and fiction’. He offers a panorama that delicately connects the past and the present. Not only the artist researches interactions between ancient and contemporary history and culture, but also minutely expresses narratives and depicts the contradicting world that surrounds us. Qiu treats the painted canvas as one frame, and photographs the canvases that show gradual changes to create a video. He uses a classic animation technique called stop motion, where each image is projected continuously creating a moving picture, resulting in an interesting output is created where the scent of paint is permeated.

Born in 1972 in Sichuan, Chengdu, Qiu graduated from Sichuan Art Institution in 1994. In 2003, he went abroad to Kassel, Germany, and studied contemporary art and Chinese traditional cultures at College of Art in University of Kassel. Since 2004, Qiu is based in Shanghai, teaching at East China Normal University. His works are part of public collections at Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, and Kunsthaus Zurich in Switzerland.
