Sam FRANCIS

 

Biography
Sam Francis (1923-1994) was born in 1923, California, USA. He received bachelors degree in psychology and studied medicine for maters degree in University of California, Berkeley.

 As the World War II started, he enrolled in the air force and ends up getting into an airplane crash. In the three years of recovery, Francis starts art as a part of the healing process. As Francis learned about the violence that human can bring to the world through war time, he focused on the human qualities like sensibility and creativity in making art. As he is known as one of the leaders of the second generation American abstract expressionist, he was influenced by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and traditional Japanese art and also the French abstract painter’s movement ‘informel.

 ’ Francis adopted thinly coated paint and the empty spaces on canvas from the Japanese art creating certain emotional dynamic within every piece. He put his raw energy and imagination frankly on canvas.

 Francis has perfected his style and color until his death in 1994, the dramatic gesture and his understanding of abstract expressionism come through honestly in his art work.
