Richard SERRA
Biography
Richard Serra was born in 1939, San Francisco, USA. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley in 1957 with the degree in English literature. After, he received MFA at Yale University. Serra is currently located in New York and Nova Scotia and still actively working.

Serra, in the mid 60s, worked with rubber, fluorescent light, melted lead, and created abstract pieces. However, starting in 1970, Serra used iron. Working at the metal factory as a teenager has influenced his working process. Understanding the chosen site, achieving gravity and balance in that location is a critical factor for Serra. When that gravity and balance is perfectly achieved, the viewers are able to see the sculpture as its raw material: iron, but also feel the sculpture by its shape. Heavy and strong qualities of iron show flexibility and lightness when transformed by Serra. Therefore, when standing in Serra’s large-scale sculpture, one can physically feel the pressure, gravity, and balance and psychologically experience feeling stable and unstable at the same time.

For Serra, drawing is also a great importance. For him, the acting of drawing awakes his unrealized creativity. Therefore, through drawing, Serra can experience the immediate return to his effort and finds himself in a new place. Furthermore, the composition of the drawings and the details add to his imagination and make a path for his large-scale sculptures.
