Simon Hantai(1922- 2008) was born in 1922, Bia, Budapest. At the age of eight, he got diphtheria and went temporarily blind. Hantai has commented that this experience has led him to create the ‘folding’ method in painting later on in his life. After graduating from Budapest School of Fine Art, he moved to France and became a member of the Surrealism movement. Hantai experimented with Pliage, Collage, and Frottage. As he was influenced by the work of Jackson Pollock and Georges Mathieu in the mid 1950s, he had finalized the ‘pliage’ method and made it his own. 1922 Born in Hungary 1949 Moved to France Selected Solo Exhibitions 1976 Musée d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris- Paris, France 2007 FIAC Foire Internationale d'Art Contemporain 2004 FIAC Foire Internationale d'Art Contemporain, n°31 2003 KUNSTKÖLN 2003- Internationale Messe für Editionen, Art Brut, Kunst nach 1980 2002 Paris Expo-Porte de Versailles- Paris, France 2001 Paris Expo-Porte de Versailles- Paris, France 2000 Salon de Mars, Palexpo- Geneva GE, Switzerland Selected Group exhibitions 2003 Exposition vente, André Breton, 42 rue Fontaine 20 ans de création dans les Fonds Régionaux d’Art Contemporain- Nantes, France 2002 Rapprochements-entre L'art et la mode- Paris, France Donation Jean Hamon, Hors les Murs- Antony, France Signes du temps Eglise- Pontivy, France 2001 As Painting: Division and Displacement- Columbus OH, United States Le Fresnoy Studio national des Arts Contemporains- Tourcoing, France 1999 La peinture après l'abstraction, Musée d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, France 1982 Aperto 82- Biennale di Venezia, n°40, Venice VE, Italy
