SONG Hyun-sook: breath and brushstrokes

SONG Hyun-sook

Hakgojae Gallery is delighted to present a solo show of Song Hyun-Sook from 14th November to 31st December 2014. Song had been sent to Germany in 1970s to serve as a guest worker as a nurse. After the four-year service, she entered College of Fine Arts in Hamburg and has actively started her new career as an artist.

Song uses tempera, a traditional Western medium, and canvas for her paintings, but they are calm and clean works that are composed of each stroke painted one by one with a gwiyal brush, a traditional big Korean paintbrush used for paste or lackers. European tempera and a Korean gwiyal brush and emotional expression created by one stroke and rational titles named after the numbers of brushstrokes: the artist harmonizes antithetical elements. Song conveys the emotion of ‘longing’ through figuration, brushstrokes and colors. The missing hometown, unfamiliarity in the foreign land, sorrow and conflict, sociality and the afterimage of zeitgeist are filled within the canvas.
Her solo exhibition in six years since 2008, presents 16 new paintings that include the images of a pot, a white veil hung on the perch and a crock that are disappeared into the far side of artist’s memory by the few brushstrokes.
