Yangachi: A Night of Burning Bone and Skin

Yangachi

Hakgojae Gallery presents A Night of Burning Bone and Skin, a solo exhibition of media artist Yangachi. A Night of Burning Bone and Skin shares its title with a movie of the same title, one of many poster child of “3S policy (Sex, Sports and Screen)” pursued by military regime in the early 1980s in South Korea. The exhibition title was chosen specifically to reflect the artist’s view that over the course of thirty-odd years, the sick society of our time has not changed much since the 80’s that was distorted by the 3S policy.

Yangachi’s solo exhibition at Hakojae for the first time features his new works in five years since his last solo exhibition. This time, his matured works amplify Yangachi’s struggle to break the mold and self-manipulation, and his attempt to solicit his own inner strength. Now in his forties and his art world in its prime, Yangachi aims to voice out his social participation by showcasing unwanted repetition of distorted history in our time. As can be noticed from the exhibition title, the audience will perceive the artist's efforts to visualize human senses through about 40 pieces of installations, photographs, and video works.
