Hakgojae Shanghai is proud to present the internationally renowned artist Nam June Paik's first solo exhibition in Shanghai Meeting Nam June Paik in Shanghai from September 12th to November 2nd, 2014.
 
Korean-born artist Nam June Paik(1932-2006) is generally acknowledged as a “pioneer of video art" and has represented history of video art for over half a century. End of 1950s, Paik became involved with the Neo-Dada artists, collectively known as Fluxus, which was inspired by composer John Cage and his use of everyday sounds and noises in his music, and he kept to show avant-garde experimental performances and exhibitions. Video sculptures, installations, performances, single channel videos, videotapes and television productions…etc., his innovative spectrums of art and visionary ideas are continually inspiring to all media artists till now. Paik has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including two major retrospectives, and has been featured in major international art exhibitions including Kassel Documenta 6 and 8(1977 and 1987), the Whitney Biennial(1977, 1981, 1983, 1987 and 1989) and the Venice Biennale(1984 and 1993). He was awarded a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1993.
 
This exciting exhibition will feature Paik's essential works including early TV piece in 1960s- TV candle- and 2 monumental installations in 1990s- Nostalgia is an extended feedback and large-scale installation W3. Hakgojae Shanghai hopes that the audience can experience the artist’s genius as well as his wide sense, besides his influence on contemporary art internationally, and his vision on developments in technology and science of today. More, Hakgojae Shanghai showcases his TV robots in 1990s which is relevant to fairs such as Art in the City which will be held in K11 from September 11 to 14, 2014 and as well as West bund Art and Design(September 24 to 28, 2014). The series of TV robots show artist's wit and humor in the way of creating human figures. Self Portrait(Eskimo Man), Charlotte, Techno Boy II and Pluie dans mon Coeur Comme il Pleut sur la Ville will be presented around the city of Shanghai during his exhibition period.
