KIM Hyunsik

Kim Hyunsik materializes colorful images through resin. His work may appear as abstract paintings, but they are flat sculptures with great weight and thickness. His work shows Bernard Waldenfels’s “transforming power of repetition” through its repeated process of filling space with color, scraping off fine stripes, and filling space with color again. Even though the series Who Likes K Colors? consists of identical groups of vertical lines, but the artist’s breath, speed of gesture, and intensity while scraping off the lines create personal and specific images with the line’s various thickness and depths. The importance of Kim’s works is not replicating the exact same things repeatedly, but to create distinction through repetition. The distinction of his work process creates endless depth on top of a layer of transparent and glossy epoxy. Each of his work creates distinct experiences through the harmonizing of various thicknesses and depths of color and shade.

Kim Hyunsik was born in 1965, South Korea and received BFA in painting from Hongik University in Seoul. Kim held numerous solo exhibitions internationally in Seoul, Beijing, London, Brussels and participated group exhibitions at Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul(2014), Busan Biennale, Busan(2012), Galerie Orem, Paris(2010), Galerie von Braunbehrens, Munchen, Germany(2009). Kim awarded “Korea Tomorrow” prize in 2014.
