SUH Yongsun

 

 

 
 
Suh Yongsun was born in Seoul in 1951, the following year of the outbreak of the Korean War. He spent his adolescent years in the outskirts of Seoul. He holds his B.F.A. and M.F.A from Seoul National University (SNU) and worked as a professor of the paintings department at SNU for 20 years until 2009. Since 2009, the year he was chosen as the “Artist of the Year” by National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, he has become a full-time painter.

Suh made his debut as a painter by submitting his extremely realistic work at the 1st Joongang Art Award in 1978 and at the 9th Korea Art Award. However, he was earnestly introduced by his series. He continued to work in themes: the cityscapes of Korea, the Korean War, and other tragedies of Korean history. Today, he participates in the art community movement and the depicting subjects include Mt. Jiri, Mt. Taebaek and mythology. His interests spread widely from people’s ordinary lives to the world.
 
He had numerous solo and group exhibitions in major museums and galleries around the world. He was awarded 2009 the Artist of the Year by MMCA in Korea and Lee Jung-seob Art Award in 2014. His works are in the major collections that include National Museum of Modern and Contemporary art, Seoul Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Art, Daegu Art Museum and Singapore Art Museum.
