Thomas Scheibitz

Thomas Scheibitz is one of the most prominent contemporary German artists who is renowned for conceptual paintings and sculptures that eventually dissolves the boundaries by grafting the realms between figuration and abstraction. The artist has developed his exquisite painterly language by disassembling the images that he has collected including architectures, cityscapes, pop cultures, drawings that are inspired by classical paintings - then reorganizing them into his own contexts. Through this process, the artist provides the viewers with uncanny sensation. In particular, the artist leaves space for intuition and imagination between the viewers and the works by attempting to abstract his oeuvre one step further through his recent works.

Thomas Scheibitz was born in Radeberg, Germany in 1968 and graduated from Hochschule für Bildende Künste with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. In 2005, he was the representative of the German Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale along with Tino Segal. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in various institutions such as Kunstmuseum Bonn in Germany (2018), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in U.K. (2013), Museum of Modern Art in Germany (2012), Irish Museum of Modern Art in Ireland (2007) and many others. Selected group exhibitions include, Stedelijk Museum in Netherlands (2016), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in U.S. (2012), Pinakothek der Moderne in Germany (2012), Centre Pompidou in Paris (2012) and Palais de Tokyo in France (2012). His works are also held in many public collections including Tate Modern (London), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco), Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt am Main), Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart (Berlin), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Centre Pompidou (Paris). He currently lives and works in Berlin.
