KIM Ho-deuk

Kim Ho-deuk was born in Daegu, Korea, in 1950. After completing his second year in middle school, Kim moved to Seoul and entered Seoul Arts High School and then proceeded to College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, majoring in Western Painting. He studied both Western and Oriental painting as an undergraduate. However, he eventually chose Oriental painting. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in 1975, he received his Master's degree in Oriental painting at the same university in 1985. His decisions were made based on his belief that as a person born in Korea, he must seek new possibilities for traditional Korean painting.

In 1985, the same year he received his Master’s degree, he was invited to participate in the Oriental painting section for a group exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul). In the following year, in 1986, he held his first solo exhibition at KwanHoon Gallery (Seoul). Since then, he has held over 35 solo exhibitions. He also actively participated in numerous group exhibitions held at representative domestic art institutions such as National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul; Gwacheon, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Jeju Museum of Art (Jeju, Korea), Arko Art Center (Seoul) etc. and at various international art institutions such as Church of Sorbonne (Paris), National Museum of China (Beijing), National Gallery Prague (Prague), etc. Kim received the 15th Lee Joong Sup Award (Chosun Ilbo, Seoul) in 2004, and the 4th Cultural Award of Kim Swoo Geun Foundation (Fine Art) (Kim Swoo Geun Foundation, Seoul) in 1993, and more. His works are a part of prestigious domestic art institutions’ collections such as National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Daejeon Museum of Art (Daejeon, Korea), and more.
