Hakgojae Gallery proudly presents the works of Kwon SunKwan (b. 1973, Korea) in his solo exhibition, The Mulch and Bones on view from October 19th (FRI) to November 10th (SAT), 2018. This exhibition tackles the physical and mental violence and damage committed and caused by the dominating class of the nation and society. Kwon’s works that portray the innocent people that have been sacrificed within the acute opposition of ideologies are presented. The portraits of humans are depicted as the vestige the person has left in the scenery, rather than the figure itself of the person. At times the portraits are direct, and other times metaphorical.

The works that compose this exhibition varies; from photography to sound. The large-scale photograph displayed on the first floor of the exhibition space, depicts the raging waves hitting against the beach. It revives the history that endlessly floods into and washes away, into the present. Stepping into the second basement floor, a bizarre sound fills the space. This work is a sound installation composed of sounds collected over the course of 17 hours at the DMZ, compressing and overlapping it into one short minute like stacking a tower. The collection of sound drifting for over 60 years after the Korean War renders into a bizarrely formed mass.

Kwon SunKwan was one of the first photographers to enter Korea National University of Arts. He is known for his works that capture the chaos he undergoes between his personal experiences and the history of society. In 2005, he was selected as the Alternative Space Pool Granted New Artist, and in 2007, he received The May 18 Memorial Foundation Granted Artist Award. He has held solo exhibitions at institutions such as Sungkok Art Museum (Seoul), Art Center NAbi (Seoul), Alternative Space Pool (Seoul), etc. He has participated in various group exhibitions held at institutions such as 2016 Busan Biennale (Busan, Korea), Arko Art Center (Seoul), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), etc. His works are a part of prominent art institutions such as National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (Ansan, Korea), etc.
