CHUNG Hyun

Hakgojae Gallery cordially invites you to Chung Hyun’s solo exhibition from October 15th to November 9th. This exhibition is Chung’s 17th solo exhibition, also his second solo show at Hakgojae Gallery, and will show mainly drawings along with sculptures.

Chung Hyun does not give extreme changes to his material. Instead, he tends to correspond to the material and attempts to grasp and work with material’s natural features. The material in use is abandoned steel, and what artist tries to do is bring out the material’s innate energy onto its surface. He takes materials that are worn-out, used, and abandoned such as railroad ties, charcoal, asphalt concrete and broken stones, and brings out man’s true self from them. This is as much as evident in his drawings as well. In his drawings, Chung mainly uses coal tar and oil bar; through rough and sharp grains drawn on paper, he presents not the form of an image but material’s own existence.

In this exhibition, works will be presented just as they are with coarse grains and rusts. Audience will be able to experience energy and power that these steel naturally carry within through Chung’s rough and defiant way of handling the material.
